China Rejects Nepal’s Claims Over Deadly Floods and Dam Collapse Allegations

Date:

Beijing has firmly denied allegations from Nepal stating that the breach of a Chinese geological disaster dam triggered catastrophic flash floods across the border. Chinese diplomatic officials labelled the claims as unverified rumors and stated that accusations do not contribute to relief operations during major natural disasters.

Diplomatic Denial of Fault and Warnings

The Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu issued an official clarification addressing the accusations regarding the Himalayan flood crisis. Reports originating from Nepal suggested that a dam breach in Tibet caused sudden surges of floodwaters along downstream river basins. Chinese authorities dismissed these statements, asserting that no infrastructure failure on their side caused the disaster.

Additionally, Beijing rejected claims that it failed to issue timely early warnings to Nepalese authorities. Chinese officials maintained that communication lines remained functional and that blaming neighboring nations during a complex environmental catastrophe distracts from essential humanitarian responses.

Glacial Collapse and Earthquake Activity Identified

Providing an alternate technical explanation, Chinese officials pointed to seismic and glaciological events on the Nepalese side of the border. According to official diplomatic statements, an earthquake or seismic glacial collapse occurred on the morning of August 26 within Nepal’s territory.

This event triggered massive mudslides and rock avalanches along the Gyirong-Rasuwagadhi border corridor. The resulting surge carried heavy loads of silt, boulders, and glacial melt, leading to widespread casualties and destruction on both sides of the frontier.

Scale of Destruction and Human Toll

The catastrophic flow swept through mountain communities with immense force, inundating villages, destroying key bridges, and severing vital highway connections. Emergency response teams report severe infrastructural damage across border districts, leaving thousands without immediate access to road transport or power supplies.

The human cost of the disaster remains alarming, with over 175 confirmed deaths and more than 1,300 individuals reported missing. Search and rescue operations face continuous hurdles due to active mudslides, damaged communication lines, and unstable terrain along the Himalayan belt.

Calls for Bilateral Disaster Cooperation

Emphasizing the need for joint action, Chinese representatives stressed that coordinated disaster management is essential for boundary communities. The statement noted that accusations yield no practical benefit, whereas joint rescue efforts and shared environmental monitoring can mitigate further losses.

Both nations are currently attempting to clear debris, restore essential services, and trace missing citizens along the shared frontier while scientific teams continue analyzing satellite imagery to establish the precise sequence of environmental events.
