Government Moves Towards Fully Digital Toll System
The Indian government is moving toward a fully digital toll collection system on national highways, which means motorists may soon no longer be able to pay toll charges using cash. Instead, digital payment methods such as FASTag and UPI will become the primary modes for paying toll fees.

FASTag and UPI to Be the Main Payment Methods
Under the new plan, drivers will be required to pay toll charges through digital methods such as FASTag or the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). FASTag is an electronic toll collection system that automatically deducts the toll amount from a linked prepaid account when a vehicle passes through a toll plaza.
The system uses radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology and allows vehicles to move through toll booths without stopping, making travel faster and more convenient.
Even if a vehicle does not have FASTag, digital payment options such as UPI will still be available. However, authorities are encouraging all vehicle owners to install FASTag to avoid delays and additional charges.
The government believes that widespread adoption of FASTag will significantly reduce long queues at toll plazas and improve the overall travel experience for commuters.
