Helicopter Service Launching for Shimla-Kinnaur This December

Date:

A new helicopter taxi service connecting Shimla and Kinnaur is set to begin operations this December, offering faster and more convenient travel for tourists visiting Himachal Pradesh. The service will be operated by Pawan Hans Aviation from the Sanjauli Heliport, following approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Faster Travel Between Chandigarh, Mohali and Himachal

Once operational, the Mohali–Shimla–Rampur–Kalpa helicopter route will significantly reduce travel time for visitors arriving from Chandigarh and Mohali. Instead of landing at Jubbarhatti Airport, passengers will now directly arrive at the Sanjauli Heliport, located closer to the main city.

Officials from the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department have confirmed that flight schedules, weekly service days, and fare structures are in the final stage of planning. The introduction of this air route is expected to enhance tourist mobility during peak winter months, especially when heavy snowfall often impacts road connectivity.

Newly Developed Heliport to Support Operations

The Sanjauli Heliport, constructed at a cost of ₹18 crore near Chalaunthi, includes parking space for up to 50 vehicles. Although inaugurated in January 2022, it will now be fully utilized for commercial operations. Night landing facilities have also been added to accommodate emergency and scheduled flights.

Boost to Emergency Medical Services

Beyond tourism, the helicopter service will also support medical emergencies. Critical patients from the Rampur region can be airlifted directly to IGMC Shimla or the Chamyana Hospital. If required, emergency transfers to PGI Chandigarh will also be possible.

According to Tourism Director Vivek Bhatia, preparations are being completed as per the Chief Minister’s directive, and the state is on track to launch the service in December. The new air route is expected to provide both convenience and safety for residents and tourists alike.
