Explosive Device Detonates Near Government School in Bajaur District; Major Tragedy Averted

Date:

Heavy Blast Shakes Border District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

A high-intensity explosive device detonated near a government educational facility in northwestern Pakistan, triggering widespread panic across the sensitive border region. The blast occurred in close proximity to the Government Middle School in the Loi Kharki area of Salarzai tehsil, located within the Bajaur district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The sudden explosion shattered windows and damaged adjacent boundary walls, sending shockwaves through the local community and highlighting the persistent security challenges in tribal districts.

Improvised Explosive Device Planted Near School Gate

According to preliminary reports from local police and security personnel, unknown militants had planted an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) near the primary entry gate of the school premises. The explosive went off during early morning hours before students and faculty members had assembled for regular academic activities. Because the detonation occurred ahead of school hours, no casualties or injuries were reported among children or staff members, narrowly averting what could have been a devastating mass-casualty event.

Security Forces Cordone Off Area and Launch Search Operation

Immediately following the powerful blast, heavy contingents of the police, Frontier Corps (FC), and bomb disposal units rushed to the scene to secure the area. Law enforcement authorities quickly cordoned off the entire Loi Kharki village and initiated a comprehensive search and sweep operation across the surrounding terrain. Bomb disposal experts collected explosive residue, metal fragments, and forensic evidence from the blast crater to determine the exact composition and trigger mechanism of the device.

Rising Security Concerns in Bajaur’s Educational Sector

The attack has rekindled deep anxieties among parents, educators, and civil society groups regarding the safety of academic institutions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Bajaur district, which borders Afghanistan, has witnessed a resurgence in targeted attacks against state infrastructure, security checkpoints, and educational institutions in recent months. Local elders and community leaders have demanded heightened security measures around public schools to ensure a safe learning environment for children in rural border areas.

Investigation Underway as Authorities Maintain High Alert

While no militant group immediately claimed responsibility for planting the IED, police authorities have registered a case under relevant anti-terrorism laws against unidentified insurgents. Regional security agencies have been placed on high alert, with additional checkpoints established along key transit routes in Salarzai tehsil. Local officials assured residents that intelligence-led counter-terrorism operations will be intensified to track down the perpetrators responsible for targeting educational infrastructure.
