India Clarifies Its Position on Iran-Israel Conflict
India has made it clear that it will not act as a mediator in the ongoing tensions related to the Iran-Israel conflict and the wider West Asia crisis. During a meeting with political leaders, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar firmly rejected suggestions that India should play the role of a diplomatic intermediary.
The statement came amid discussions about regional tensions and diplomatic developments involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. The government emphasized that while India supports peace and de-escalation, it will not assume the role of a “broker nation” in the conflict.
According to officials, India’s priority remains safeguarding its national interests and maintaining balanced relations with all countries involved.
‘India Cannot Be a Broker Nation’
Speaking during the all-party meeting, Jaishankar reportedly said that India cannot act as a go-between country in international conflicts like Pakistan has done in the past. He stressed that India’s diplomatic approach is different and focused on constructive engagement rather than mediation.
The remarks came after questions were raised about Pakistan’s attempts to position itself as a mediator between Iran and the United States.
Jaishankar highlighted that Pakistan has historically played intermediary roles in global diplomacy, but India does not see itself performing such a function.
India Calls for De-Escalation and Peace
While rejecting the mediation role, the Indian government reiterated that it supports peaceful resolution of conflicts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also spoken with global leaders regarding the escalating crisis.
During a conversation with former US President Donald Trump, Modi reportedly emphasized the need for an early end to hostilities and urged all sides to work toward stability in the region.
India has maintained that ongoing conflicts in West Asia impact global stability, energy supplies, and economic conditions worldwide.
Opposition Questions Government’s Response
During the meeting, some opposition leaders reportedly questioned the government’s diplomatic stance on the West Asia crisis. They asked whether India should take a stronger role in international efforts to reduce tensions.
However, the government clarified that India’s diplomatic policy focuses on maintaining relations with all sides while encouraging peace.
Officials also briefed political parties on developments related to the Iran crisis and its potential impact on India’s energy security and international relations.
India Maintains Neutral Diplomatic Approach
India has traditionally maintained a balanced foreign policy in the Middle East. The country shares strategic and economic ties with several regional powers, including Iran, Israel, and Gulf nations.
Analysts say that taking on a mediation role could complicate India’s diplomatic relations. Instead, New Delhi is focusing on maintaining stability, ensuring energy supplies, and protecting Indian citizens living in the region.
India has repeatedly urged all countries involved in the conflict to exercise restraint and pursue dialogue rather than military escalation.
