Congress Warns on Chandigarh Status: Punjab Must Unite

Date:

Congress Raises Alarm Over Chandigarh’s Future

The Punjab Congress unit has issued a significant warning, urging all political parties and citizens of Punjab to unite to prevent any perceived attempts by the Central government to “annex” or alter the long-standing status of Chandigarh. The party’s statement underscores the growing apprehension within the state regarding the shared capital’s future.

Chandigarh, a Union Territory, serves as the joint capital of both Punjab and Haryana. Its status has historically been a sensitive and often contentious issue in regional politics, with both states staking claims. The recent remarks from the Congress leadership indicate a renewed concern that the Centre might be contemplating policy decisions that could impact this delicate balance.

Senior Congress leaders, addressing the media, highlighted the critical importance of Chandigarh to Punjab’s identity and interests. They cautioned against any unilateral decisions by the Central government, stressing that such moves would be detrimental to the spirit of federalism and could ignite widespread political unrest in the state. The party called for immediate and proactive measures to safeguard Punjab’s claims over its capital.

The Congress also appealed to other political factions, including the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Punjab, to set aside their differences and forge a united front. They stressed that the issue of Chandigarh’s status transcends party politics and requires a collective, unwavering stand from the entire state apparatus and its representatives.

Observers suggest that this warning comes amidst ongoing discussions at various levels concerning administrative control and resource allocation related to Chandigarh. The Congress’s assertive stance aims to rally public and political opinion, ensuring that Punjab’s voice is heard decisively on an issue with profound historical and emotional significance for its people.
